Activision Takes Over “Halo” Franchise

Microsoft

Activision, the developer behind the “Call of Duty,” “Crash Bandicoot” and “Tony Hawk Pro Skater” franchises, will make the next “Halo” game at Xbox.

According to THR, it will be a “full-feature, mainline installment” in the franchise as opposed to a reboot or remake.

The original “Halo” games were previously made by franchise creator Bungie and then later 343 Industries who took over from “Halo 4”.

Rob Kostich, the Activision president, said in a statement:

“For Halo, our goal is clear: make the greatest Halo game ever, worthy of its universe and legacy, while staying true to what made players love it in the first place. It is a bold ambition, one that this franchise deserves. We have already begun assembling a purpose-built team, unique in capability and talent, ready and excited to deliver this next chapter with the community.”

The news comes as part of announcements today that Xbox is laying off another 268 workers today, with numerous Xbox-owned developers being absorbed into other companies under the Xbox banner.

Undead Labs is being spun out to its own management; Bethesda is absorbing Obsidian; King is absorbing Microsoft Casual Games, Playground and Turn 10 will merge, and Ninja Theory is being shuttered.
