“Wildwood” is set to be “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” studio LAIKA’s first ever PG-13 rated film.
The MPA has granted the rating for “strong fantasy violence/bloody images, thematic material, suicide related material, brief partial nudity and language”.
The project marks the company’s sixth feature and is helmed by Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Strings”) from a script by Chris Butler (“ParaNorman,” “Missing Link”), based on the novel by Colin Meloy.
The Portland-set story follows Prue McKeel who, along with her best friend Curtis, enters a hidden and enchanted forest cultivated by original settlers known as the
impassable wilderness.
The woods want to keep people away from whatever secrets are hiding inside, including her baby brother Mac, who has been taken by a murder of crows and a mysterious woman named Alexandra into the forest’s depths.
Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amanda Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits and Richard E. Grant lend their voices to the project.
“Wildwood” is set for release in cinemas on October 23rd.
