Filmmaker Jon Watts has been attached to direct the first film in the new “Star Wars” film trilogy at Lucasfilm. The report first arrived via scooper DanielRPK and was later confirmed by the trades, including THR.
This is the Simon Kinberg-penned trilogy with events set after those of the sequel trilogy and its final entry, 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.
Watts most famously directed the first three Tom Holland-led “Spider-Man” movies, starting with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” through to “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.
He’s also worked on Star Wars, serving as showrunner and helming some episodes of the “Skeleton Crew” TV series on Disney+.
On Monday, a report said a director has been selected for the gig, but it didn’t say who. That report claimed production is picking up steam fast and could begin filming as early as 2027.
The trade report today says that while the film has not yet been greenlit by parent company Disney, it’s the project furthest along the development track after Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” opening in cinemas in May next year.
In addition, they indicate that Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker will appear in some capacity in the new trilogy.
Aside from ‘Starfighter’ in May, next year will also see the original theatrical version of 1977’s “Star Wars” return to cinemas in February.
