“Street Fighter” Targets Near $70M Global Start

Paramount Pictures

The first Paramount film scoring a cinema release since Skydance officially acquired Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary’s “Street Fighter” hits screens Friday and is shaping up to have a pretty good start.

The latest film adaptation of the famed Capcom fighting game is expected to open domestically in $25-35 million range and overseas in the mid-$30 million range, for a worldwide debut of nearly $70 million.

Budgeted at $82 million, the film has a PG-13 rating, which is expected to result in a broader age audience in attendance than the recent “Mortal Kombat” films. Earlier this year, “Mortal Kombat II” debuted to $38.5 million domestically but fizzled fast and did poorly overseas.

That’s going to overpower “Whalefall,” the Austin Abrams-led survival thriller which is headed for a $11-12 million start domestically and the same again overseas. Budgeted at $60 million, it’s an OK start. Reviews, while positive, aren’t nearly as gushing as the Abrams-led “Resident Evil” last month, so it’s facing a rougher road.

One title that is driving a lot of chatter is Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder’s documentary “You Can See Everything” about fallen Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Projections are that the film, which has received universal acclaim, could snag over $8-10 million domestically in its launch – a stunning start for a documentary (which cost under $20 million total to make and market).

Also releasing in the US this weekend is the latest adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility,” which is targeting an $8 million start. Reviews are decent but not remotely close to the acclaim that Ang Lee’s 1995 film adaptation with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet received.

The newly restored, uncensored version of Ken Russell’s “The Devils” is also set to debut domestically ahead of an international rollout later this month, while “Crawlers” also debuts.
